About Architecture

What's a Real Architect?

A heated discussion has been brewing in the ARE Forum, where a couple members declared that Maya Lin isn't an architect. An artist, yes, but not a real architect. So, I'm scratching my head and wondering, what's a REAL architect? Was Andrea Palladio, who lived long before the age of professional licensing, a real architect? How about Frank Lloyd Wright, who left college after a few semesters?

Well, of course they were. But wait! If masters from the past could become architects, why do we need Architect Registration Exams and other architectural licensing requirements?

It's no wonder tempers flared in the ARE Forum.

20 Years of Universal Design

Oslo Opera House in Oslo, NorwayClimbing the steep promenade of the Oslo Opera House, I wondered whether a building like this could exist in the United States. The jagged ledges and sudden drops are beautiful and dramatic, but definitely not ADA compliant.

Twenty years have passed since Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). For disabled persons, the law offered much-needed protections. However, architects and home designers faced complex challenges. How could they meet the needs of all people, young and old, abled and disabled? How The Disabilities Act Has Influenced Architecture, from NPR How to Build For Accessibility ADA Accessibility Guidelines Facts About the Americans with Disabilities Act

Chelsea Clinton's Romantic Wedding Venue

Chelsea Clinton Wedding Site, Astor Courts in Rhinebeck, NY
Chelsea Clinton picked an elegant Beaux Arts building as the site for her July 31 wedding. Astor Courts in Rhinebeck, New York is a fitting wedding venue for the daughter of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former USA president Bill Clinton. With a magnificent columned terrace overlooking the Hudson River, Astor Courts is often compared to Louis XIV's Grand Trianon at Versailles.

But, of course, everyone has their own idea of romance. Where did you get married? Tell us about your wedding venue.

Does Architecture Make You Happy?

Scientists and psychologists say yes! Our physical surroundings affect the way we think and feel, claim researchers who study neuroaesthetics and emodied congnition. But for anyone who's ever designed or decorated a home, all this is old news. In fact, the modern scientific theories sound a lot like the ancient art of feng shui.

Happy Birthday, Arata Isozaki

Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles The bold and inventive architect Arata Isozaki was born on July 23, 1931 in Oita, Kyushu, Japan. Arata Isozaki often integrates Eastern ideas into his designs. Some critics have identified his Isoazki's work with the imaginative, Japanese New Wave movement known as Metabolism. Shown here is Isozaki's Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles.

Happy Birthday, Richard Rogers

175 Greenwich Street, World Trade Center Site The Pritzker Prize-winning British architect Richard Rogers was born on July 23, 1933 in Florence, Italy. His early years didn't seem promising. Richard Rogers suffered dyslexia and didn't excel in school. But, after a scrape with the law and a stint in the military, Rogers decided to follow in the footsteps of an architect cousin. The rest is history.

See drawings and photos of Rogers' grand yet transparent buildings in our Richard Rogers Picture Gallery >>

Good Architecture = Good Schools?

When schools perform poorly, it's tempting to pour money into bricks and mortar. But do beautiful schools with modern classrooms help students learn? Architecture critic Rowan Moore and teacher-writer Rich Jones tackled the question in The Guardian.

Discovery at Ground Zero

Just when we thought reconstruction on the New York World Trade Center was picking up speed, workers hit a new snag. Or, I should say, an old snag. Twenty feet beneath the construction site, they uncovered the hull of 200-year-old cargo ship.

How did a ship end up on the site of the terrorist attacks? Is the New York World Trade Center jinxed?

Not to worry. Archaeologists say that New York's settlers used old ships for landfill when they built the city. The soil is rich with archaeological artifacts. Many were lost in the 1970s, when the earlier World Trade Center buildings were constructed.
